Тhe Church of St. Stephen

The Church of St. Stephen, also known as the "New Metropolis," is one of the most remarkable holy sites in Nessebar and a unique monument protected by UNESCO. This temple, originally erected in the 11th century and initially dedicated to "St. Mary Life Giving Spring," serves as a veritable "Bible in pictures," preserving over a millennium of history. Upon entering, the architectural elegance and the continuity between eras are immediately striking, the marble columns inside stand upon repurposed ancient Corinthian capitals from the 5th and 6th centuries, uniquely linking medieval faith with the city’s ancient grandeur. Over the centuries, the building underwent significant changes. It was extended westward in the 16th century, at which point the original dome was removed, and its current external narthex was added in the 18th century. The church’s true treasure, however, lies in its murals, which cover the walls with over 1,000 images spread across 258 moving scenes. Most of these date to 1599 and are the work of masters from the Mesembrian school, showing a tangible influence from Cretan painting. Amidst this ocean of colors, precious fragments of the oldest murals still remain hidden, dating back to the era of Tsar Ivan Alexander from 1331 to 1371, which marked the Golden Age of medieval Nessebar. The interior is further enhanced by a magnificent carved pulpit and a bishop’s throne from 1798, as well as a unique painted iconostasis from the 16th century. In the narthex, visitors are greeted by a large scale scene of the "Last Judgment" dating from 1712. The story behind the temple’s current name is particularly dramatic. It was renamed "St. Stephen" only in 1855, after the original church of the same name on the eastern shore collapsed into the sea. Local residents managed to save their most sacred relic, the skull of the Holy First Martyr Stephen in its silver cladding, and brought it here. Today, St. Stephen functions as a museum and remains an eternal witness to the spiritual strength and cultural flourish of Nessebar, a true historical treasure house of Bulgaria.
