,,St. St. Archangels Michael and Gabriel”

The Church of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel can serve as the natural "companion" to the Church of ,,Christ Pantocrator”. These two temples are like architectural siblings, illustrating the greatest cultural and economic peak of medieval Nessebar. Constructed in the 13th century, this single-nave structure, measuring nearly 14 meters in length, was once crowned with a majestic high dome that unfortunately collapsed around 1860. As you stand before its walls, you can admire the previously mentioned pictorial style’s characteristic of the High Middle Ages, achieved through the same technique used in Christ Pantokrator, where alternating rows of white limestone and red brick create a vibrant visual rhythm. This artistic effect is further enhanced by the intricate use of glazed ceramic cups and quatrefoils that catch the coastal sunlight, alongside blind arcades and semi-circular pediments that give the building its unique decorative richness. One of its most remarkable features is the square bell tower that once rose above the narthex; it was accessed by a stone staircase built ingeniously directly into the thickness of the western wall.

Beyond its architecture, the church holds a special place in local folklore, as a charming tradition dictates that this was the site where only baby boys were baptized. In contrast, baby girls were taken to the nearby Church of St. Paraskeva. Today, this medieval gem is perfectly framed by the picturesque houses of the Old Town, including the adjacent Vardalieva House, which is the only three-story building from that era in Nessebar. Together, these elements reflect the supreme craftsmanship of the Nessebar masters who seamlessly blended Byzantine influence with a unique local flair for color and form.
